Gingerbread House

My latest challenge was to bake and create a Gingerbread House.  I have created a Gingerbread House before but it was a pre-baked one and all I had to do was put it together.  This was the picture I was given to give me an idea of what was required:

I went onto the BBC Good Food website and downloaded the recipe and house pieces template.

I made the gingerbread dough as per the recipe – its hard when you’ve never made it before to know whether you have the consistency correct.

I rolled out the dough to the thickness of 2 x £1 coins and cut around the templates I’d made.

The house pieces are rolled out on baking paper and then cooked on the baking paper on the baking tray rather than directly onto the tray.  They were baked for about 20 minutes until firm.

There was quite a lot of gingerbread dough left over from the the house pieces, so I decided to make some biscuits.  I made little gingerbread men and some round biscuits.

Once the house pieces had cooled I had to join them together with buttercream and leave to set in the fridge in between.

Eventually, after some collapsing walls and roof, I managed to get everything to stay were it should.  I added some decorations for doors and windows and some icing as pretend grass.

Not as the first image but not bad for first attempt!!
